On November 16, 2011 we traveled with our respective chapters to our very own District 13-N meeting. We had a great time hearing the candidate speeches and watching the presenters interact with the members. The theme for this year’s meeting was “FCCLA: The Fast Five,” which compared FCCLA to a racetrack of opportunities. The main speaker for the day was Jane Erikson, who has had previous experience with leadership training. She spoke about the importance of effective communication by talking about various types of communicators and the effect body language has on us. She did three exciting activities to get members up and moving as well as one that illustrated the many ways to interpret things people say. One great thing about District 13-N is their ability to involve each chapter. Whether they do so by giving them an opportunity to present on STAR events or just giving a ‘thought for the day,’ each chapter had representatives on stage throughout the day. I spoke about my FCCLA experiences and things my chapter has done such as trick-or-treating for cans. High school chapter president and former state officer candidate Miranda Felton also spoke about her experiences and the things that their chapter does through the year. I had a great time gaining ideas for my chapter, exploring their school, and getting their members excited for the year! It’s always exciting to see how other schools do things during the day since I am looking forward to becoming an FCS teacher! It was great to meet some of the middle school students interested in becoming FCCLA members, and I hope they all join! Good luck to all of the West Harrison FCCLA members this year!
On Wednesday, October 26, I had the opportunity to attend the District 12 meeting. I had a fantastic time and the energy of the members was exciting! This meeting, held in Hinton included many schools from the West Central part of the state! I had a great time getting to know the members, watching their great District Officers lead their district and listening to their great speakers! In the morning, I was able to speak about my FCCLA experiences, STAR events, Peer Education and Running for Office! Following that, we heard candidate speeches and the voting commenced! After voting our main speaker, Mike Donahue from R5 Productions spoke about Walking a Mile in other people’s shoes. Mike is one of my favorite motivational speakers because after hearing Mike speak, you always feel empowered to do something positive. Next, we ate lunch and after following heard from another speaker who spoke about being an organ donor and its importance. He had a real reason for speaking about organ donations also as he had received a kidney transplant. Overall, I had a great time at the District 12 meeting and would love to attend over and over again! I love the energy [...]

In the morning, I was able to speak about my FCCLA experiences, STAR events, Peer Education
and Running for Office! Following that, we heard candidate speeches and the voting commenced! After
voting our main speaker, Mike Donahue from R5 Productions spoke about Walking a Mile in other
people’s shoes. Mike is one of my favorite motivational speakers because after hearing Mike speak, you
always feel empowered to do something positive. Next, we ate lunch and after following heard from
another speaker who spoke about being an organ donor and its importance. He had a real reason for
speaking about organ donations also as he had received a kidney transplant.

Overall, I had a great time at the District 12 meeting and would love to attend over and over
again! I love the energy and excitement through the entire meeting! I’m looking forward to seeing some
great things from the members of District 12 and I hope they had as great of a time as me! I can’t wait to
see some District 12 members at State Leadership Conference!

On November 11-13, I, Hayley Ellis, and JT Roe attended the National Cluster Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We along with many Iowa attendees participated in a weekend of unique opportunities that challenged, informed, and motivated members and their chapter advisers to explore opportunities available through FCCLA. The ‘Survivor’ theme was interesting as the National Executive Council split into teams and competed for a hypothetical one million dollars. They had to work together and use some FCCLA knowledge to work through the challenges. We enjoyed two speakers: Gerald Jones who spoke about appreciating your past in order to achieve new things today and John Beede who spoke about following your dreams and climbing the mountains that are in your way. The state officer training was more personal that at the National Leadership Conference; there were fewer State Officers we were able to get much deeper in our training and have a great time! We both attended a few Youth Sessions and our favorites included the National Executive Council’s workshop ‘Lead Out Loud’ and R5 productions workshop ‘Walk a Mile’. As always, it was fun meeting Iowa FCCLA members for the first time and seeing old friends. The NEC did a great job and if you haven’t attended a Cluster meeting, we definitely recommend doing so in the future!
